This is very much a work in progress and will be updated frequently as I work through about 20000 to 30000 CDs.

  • I'm not going through whole discographies at once but add albums as I get a chance to compare versions.

  • Just bookmark this page and check back once in a while to see what's new. By the way, I don't use WordPress etc., so you'll have to do with this "primitive" one-page setup.

Some notes:

  • Don't forget to read the introduction to this project.

  • For many artists, I have complete discographies, bought (and partly sold) between 1984 and today. Many albums went into the "vault" because I didn't like them. So, they do not appear on this list (yet).

  • Very often, I prefer earlier CD masterings. Those frequently have one or more faults, but in many cases they are still better than anything that followed from about the middle 1990s onwards. If you see two or more copies of an album on here, they each have their merits and I haven't decided which one I will keep (or, perhaps, never will).

  • I don't (and couldn't possibly) own every single CD edition of every album available. The list below shows a selection from my stash which, at some point, exceeded 30000 CDs. Today I have around 14000.

  • I use dashes instead of empty spaces in catalog numbers for optical reasons. I'm sure you can figure it out.

  • If there is a family name mentioned in the edition info, it's the remastering engineer's name (Diament, Hoffman, Anesini, ...).

Note: I used to have all the original ABBA LPs way back when, especially because my mom loved listening to them. In the digital age, I got absolutely sick and tired of all the compressed or otherwise fuzzed-with remasters available. At some point, a good friend gave me LP rips of the original Japanese Discomate LPs, which I'm sure he sourced illegally, but in this single case I didn't care and stuck with them. They are as close to the sound I remember as possible and that's good enough for me. The reunion album from 2021, which is mediocre at best, I bought as a HiRes download. For a quick listen, I also added the two ABBA Gold compilations, which were both remastered by Michael B. Tretow (ABBA's original sound engineer), the first compilation better than the second one. In any case, I still think the original first CD editions, warts and all, are the ones to go for if you are looking for OK sound and, if you want to save some cash, go for the Thank You for the Music box set which a) I also have and b) is usually out there on the second-hand market at reasonable prices.

Note: I decided to stick with the Australian Albert CDs (with correct albums and tracks), although the US Atlantics are often not bad at all (but sometimes further removed from the master tapes). The Barry Diament US remasters above are keepers for life. They are fabulous! The later Ted Jensen remasters are much louder but OK (if you are looking for affordable copies), but the 2003 Marino remasters are compressed into a straight highway to hell (be warned, they are horrible)! I might add a few later AC/DC albums, but the above ones are all I really need.

Note: The albums I could get them for, the early releases from Japan (25DP and 28DP) are better than their Columbia counterparts (although Rocks, my favorite, doesn't quite make the cut and I still need to compare it to three more versions I have and perhaps replace that one). I could have stopped after Permanent Vacation, because their later albums are often not (entirely) my thing, but Aerosmith being one of my favorite bands, I kept everything.

Note: I haven't quite decided yet, but the Mobile Fidelity editions don't really improve on anything whatsoever (unless you don't have the original releases), so they'll probably be dropped in the next round. The original editions sound fabulous, but the further we move along the timeline with later albums, the more those became compressed. Not everything Phil Collins ever released is great, but he's one of my favorite drummers, solo artists and collaborators. What a stunning body of work (especially also incl. his recordings with Genesis, below).

Note: The Doobie Brothers' original albums are more than good (and especially dynamic) enough. Their core albums didn't and don't really need a remaster, although the Mobile Fidelity SACDs are nice, just not always my cup of tea. If you go with the Warner originals, you'll be more than fine. Like I did, you can even add a Japanese edition here or there, but that's a small added bonus that you absolutely don't need to have. The albums post 1989 are nice to have but mostly not really essential (unless you enjoy the later live recordings). P.S.: Beware of the fact that "Brotherhood" exists in remastered form (French edition), which is an absolute abomination. The people responsible for that one should be drawn and quartered.

Note: Just like with The Doobie Brothers, the original CD editions are more than good (and dynamic) enough. Their core albums didn't and don't really need a remaster, although the various "audiophile" editions are nice to have. If you go with the original Asylum/Warner and Elektra editions, you'll be more than fine. The 1980 live album is the only one I'd like to have with better sonic presentation (besides the fact that it's a rather lame live album), but I suspect any modern remaster would make it even worse.

Note: Judas Priest's albums, especially their releases up to "Point of Entry", a criminally underrated album, have always been absolute favorites of mine. I grew up with this music! Unfortunately, every single "modern" remaster of those seminal albums was and is sub-par (or absolutely horrible) and the above editions are the best versions I managed to collect and that I invariably enjoy. They are mostly (much) earlier remasters that remind me of the many original LPs I used to own. Everything beyond "Angel of Retribution (2005)" sounds the same (technically), is usually (massively) compressed and just about any edition you can find is adequate enough. The most recent "Reflections" box set fixed some issues (and added new ones), but it was generally underwhelming. For "Killing Machine". which in the US was retitled "Hell Bent for Leather", the US versions were the best ones I own. So, I changed the track order back to the original (UK) one and lived happily ever after. Many people have recommended "Judas Priest [1989] The Collection (Castle)" for the first two albums. I don't have that one, but it's on my list to perhaps improve on those two releases.

Note: I have always been a huge Chris Rea fan and bought everything he released the day it was available, also later "Deluxe" and remastered editions. All his albums are well-recorded and I stuck with the originals throughout. Also the "Deluxe" editions are excellent, but I compiled a 5-CD set with the "Additional Recordings" separately and kept the original studio albums. The most recent 2025 remaster of "New Light Through Old Windows" is the only outlier. It's lacking the subtle treble boost of the original and is much more midrange heavy (but still very dynamic). So, I just added the second CD to my collection here. Last, but not least, "Nothing's Happening By the Sea" from Water Sign is one of my all-time favorite songs (and, yes, that's Montreux Jazz Festival founder Claude Nobs on harmonica).

Note: I have never been the biggest Black Sabbath fan, but I love my 1980s (warm and smooth) Castle editions, despite a few tape issues here and there, and some of the middle 2000s Japanese SHM-SACDs. I often switch between those depending on my mood. Although I usually prefer earlier masterings, those Japanese SACDs listed here are excellent (especially Master of Reality and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath) and for Heaven and Hell, I absolutely prefer the 2010 Andy Pearce remaster, which I have in the 2CD "Deluxe and Expanded" edition. The SHM-SACDs for the debut album and Heaven and Hell were not my cup of tea at all.

Note: Saxon's classic NWoBHM period is my favorite, although "Crusader" was already a weak album. The early Japanese and European CD editions sound best although, with age, I find the Japanese ones a bit too mid-rangey (probably my ears). The Peter Mew remasters should be avoided at all costs and the later Andy Pearce ones are good enough for most people, including me. Then they tried an "AOR" stunt on a few albums, which are not included here (they suck), and I picked Saxon up again when they got a new bass player in 1991 and reestablished their heavy metal foundations. I have a complete run of the rest of their albums from 1991 to 2024 but, be warned, many of their later albums are sonic abominations, highly compressed, no dynamics, in-your-face loud. Note: For me, Thin Lizzy were a live band first and foremost and I actually also did see them live more than any other band in my life, 5 or 6 times in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Compared to their live concerts, I always found their studio albums, which I had the original first release LPs of, underwhelming and disappointing in comparison (the sound, not the music). They never even got close to what the band sounded like live. The studio albums listed above, from 1974 to 1979, are from Thin Lizzy - Classic Album Selection [Mercury-Universal, 2012, 0602537035526], which I picked up for next to nothing many years ago (and which is often cheaply available, for example via Discogs Marketplace). This set contains, as far as I can tell, all the original West German Gert van Hoeyen masterings. I tried to go with earlier masterings for the other albums as well, simply because the 1996 remasters sucked and the Deluxe Editions, although I have them, did not rock my boat (they were often too "bright" and had too many errors). I still need to compile my own set of bonus tracks from those and others. Many people love the early Japanese editions (especially Jailbreak [28PD-546], Live and Dangerous [28PD-547], Black Rose [28PD-545], Chinatown [28PD-549], Renegade [PHCR-2063] and Thunder and Lightning [28PD-548], but I didn't see the immediate need for myself to hunt those down.
